Cabot Trade-Links Commanders’ Terry McLaurin to Browns

Speaking factually? We see no reason why the Cleveland Browns should be in the market here.

And more facts: We see no reason why the Super Bowl-hopeful Washington Commanders should be sellers here.

But just in case ...

Speaking on the “Baskin and Phelps” show on 92.3 The Fan this week, Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot - as plugged in as it gets when it comes to Cleveland - suggested the Browns would at least consider pursuing a top-tier wideout if the chance is there.

A wideout like Commanders holdout star Terry McLaurin?

Yes, something like that.

“When a Terry McLaurin comes along, you have to at least consider it. You have to look into it, weighing the pros and cons and how it may look over the next four years or something like that,” Cabot said. “I wouldn’t rule it out ...''

That is a reasonable just-in-case take.

But the truth is, it's more of a link to a "general way for a team to do business'' that it is a "rumor'' that deserves to have legs.

It is helpful to know that the Browns might stay aware of opportunities. But at the same time, beat writer Cabot added, "I don’t get the sense right now that (the Browns) are looking to add a high-priced wide receiver.”

And again ...

While McLaurin is in a contract standoff with the Commanders, we don't get the sense that - despite dozens of rumors - Washington wants to move him.

He is in a contract year and wants an extension. ... with most observers believing he is due that. The new going rate for standout receivers is in the $30 million APY range, and that is probably where this will go.

In the meantime, he did not show up mandatory minicamp and whether he will be a holdout from training camp if a deal isn't done is a coming concern.

McLaurin, 29, has put together five straight 1,000-yard seasons, and last year he caught 82 passes for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns while working with QB Jayden Daniels ... a combination the Commanders are not planning on breaking up.

But just in case? Sure, the Browns - and 30 other teams - would answer that just-in-case phone.
