Newcastle United's summer transfer business is expected to kick up a notch soon with Nottingham Forest's Anthony Elanga looking close to joining.

The Swedish international impressed in last season having had a torrid time at Manchester United. With the Magpies looking to forge a squad capable of competing across multiple competitions, including the Champions League, Elanga's impending arrival is not thought to be the last of their business.

As the continues and the start of the new Premier League campaign edges ever closer, Chronicle Live has taken a look at the latest rumours swirling around .

Xavi Simons enquiry made

Despite being linked with Newcastle this summer, it is understood that Bayern Munich have made the first approach for RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons. understands that Vincent Kompany's side have enquired about the Dutchman's availability as they look to move on from the Nico Williams disappointment.

Newcastle were linked with a move for Simons earlier in the window as they tried to rejuvenate their attacking midfield. However, it appears the north east club are being pushed out of the running.

What Chronicle Live says: "Simons would be an impressive signing for Newcastle heading into the Champions League. His ten goals in the Bundesliga may sound modest but Leipzig did struggle last season, hence why the Dutchman has requested to leave the club.

"With Elanga's move looking close to being completed, it seems unlikely that Newcastle will go in for Simons now and spend big money again on a position that has just been improved. Which is perhaps just as well because Bayern will present an enticing prospect."

Newcastle re-enter Ekitike race

According to , Newcastle remain in the hunt for Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike this summer. The forward is believed to be valued at £85m by the Bundesliga club and the centre-forward

Newcastle are not thought to be the only Premier League interested in the centre-forward. Chelsea are among the clubs to have been credited with interest.

What Chronicle Live says: "After Callum Wilson's exit was confirmed this week, it would be some statement of intent to bring Ekitike to the north east. Suddenly, Newcastle would have arguably two of the most fearsome centre-forwards in European football and that sort of investment should lead to higher expectations.

"Keeping Alexander Isak and splashing £85m on Ekitike would be a standout move so it would remain to be seen if the Magpies would need Frankfurt to lower their asking price."
