The latest transfer news as Wolves sanction the sale of an attacker.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have said their farewells to winger Chiquinho, who has joined Portuguese club Alverca after a full agreement was reached.
Chiquinho’s departure has been an inevitability for some time now as he has played merely 96 minutes for Wolves since joining for £3 million from Estoril Praia three and a half years ago. The winger, who has unfortunately been nothing short of a flop, will be eager to reignite his career in his home nation.
Transfer news specialist Fabrizio Romano reported it as a done deal between Wolves and Alverca on Wednesday, with Chiquinho accepting a three-year contract. Rather controversially, Wanderers aren’t recouping any of the money they spent on the winger — though there is a crucial 40 per cent sell-on clause.
As no transfer fee has been paid, said clause doesn’t apply to just profits. It means if Alverca are to sell Chiquinho later down the line, 40 per cent of the entire fee will then go to Wolves. It’s certainly not ideal as the Old Gold are ultimately making a loss, but at least there may be some monetary gain in the future.
The deal has now been confirmed by both clubs and Chiquinho has shared a short but sweet farewell message to Wanderers supporters. “Thank you Wolves family for all the support you’ve given me over the years. Once a Wolf Always a Wolf,” the winger posted on Instagram.
Chiquinho never got going at Molineux
It’s a great shame that Chiquinho’s move to Wolves never worked out as he was tipped as a player with great potential. Before he signed, the now 25-year-old had great promise at Estoril, averaging a league goal or assist every 140 minutes during his final season. He was blisteringly quick, too, but he never really got off the mark in Old Gold.
A loan to Stoke City in July 2023 that was cut short after just one month rather sums up Chiquinho’s time at Molineux. There was a glimmer of hope as he scored five goals out on loan at Famalicao in 2023/24, but it was wishful thinking that he’d ever properly succeed in Wolverhampton.
Another Portuguese could soon leave Wolves
Chiquinho isn’t the only Portuguese player who could be on the way out of Molineux as captain Nelson Semedo’s future is still unresolved. The right-back has been offered a lucrative new four-year deal but has yet to decide whether he wants to sign it or not.
As it stands, Semedo is officially a free agent following the expiry of his previous contract. Clubs are able to speak to the Portugal international as they wish and there is significant interest from clubs in Spain, Portugal, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
It would come as a great blow if Semedo decides to leave Wolves as he’s not only a key figure in the dressing room but also one of the Premier League’s most established right-backs. Signing a replacement as capable as Semedo is could be rather tricky, but it’s a task Wolves could soon face.
