The Crystal Palace defender has been linked with Liverpool but where do Newcastle United stand on the centre-back?
Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace adjusts his captain's arm band
Newcastle United have been linked with Crystal Palace's FA Cup winning skipper Marc Guehi once again.
But a move could prove to be too expensive for the defender, given his precarious contract situation as Crystal Palace stick to their guns by demanding a huge fee.
Newcastle are monitoring the situation from a distance, and while they like the Three Lions star, we understand there has been no fresh approach.
If the terms become more favourable, Newcastle may revisit the deal again, but as things stand, Palace are demanding a huge price. Just 12 months on from Steve Parish explaining Newcastle needed to pay "superstar" money for the centre-back, history is in danger of repeating itself.
The 24-year-old remains in a contract stand-off with the Eagles, and Chronicle Live understands he will be willing to run his current deal down to expiry if a suitable move is not arranged this summer.
Liverpool made enquiries on Guehi earlier in the window but appear to have been met with the same stubborn resistance that faced former Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell last summer.
Palace are after a deal worth around £50m for the centre-back, just £20m less than Newcastle offered last summer. And the question of true value comes into the equation for both the Reds and United again.
Parish, the South London club's supremo, is understood to have made it clear that there won't be any knockdown rate for the defender. He was prepared to play another game of risk just 12 months ago, and he could well see Guehi as a key figure for one last season again next term before taking the hit on losing him on a free transfer.
The Magpies will keep an eye on events at Palace with Guehi and with head of recruitment Steve Nickson overseeing the search for a centre-back the focus remains on top target Giorgio Scalvini of Atalanta and Marseille captain Leonardo Balerdi.
Nickson is a big fan of Scalvini and a well-known visitor of the Serie A club and as reported by Chronicle Live last November, the tall centre-half has been watched several times.
What is key for Howe is maximising the time Newcastle have left in the current window rather than hitting the point of frustration like last summer with Palace and Guehi.
