“Saga played out” | ExWHUEmployee | Why West Ham sold Kudus to Spurs

10th July 2025 Mark Carlaw (@markcarlaw)

West Ham have agreed a deal in the region of £55m with Spurs for Mohammed Kudus, with ExWHUEmployee shedding light on the situation.

It was a move the vast majority connected to the club wanted to avoid, to see a player with the potential Kudus has, move to our bitter London rivals this summer – especially not long after selling Declan Rice to their neighbours Arsenal only a couple of seasons ago.

However, due to the current financial state of the club, which many want answers as to how we are in such a mess – has lead West Ham to agree to the sale of Kudus, with our insider Ex sharing what has been said from a high level source at the club.

“A high powered source in the club has called and given West Ham’s take on the Kudus situation and why a bid has been accepted,” stated Ex on The West Ham Way Patreon.

“This does not mean we agree with the explanation and we are simply reporting what we were told. I think we made our opinions very clear on the podcast this week.

“I have summarised the conversation below:

“West Ham were prepared to accept less rather than sell to Spurs, but this was not an option as no cash bids were made.

“The club apparently considered the fee for Elanga, who has been better than Kudus this season, as a benchmark and that £55m plus add ons is not a terrible figure. They have also said that Pedro to Chelsea and Mbueno’s fee are also indications of this.

“The club were keen to reiterate that the player only wanted to join Spurs and turned down offers from Saudi at the start of the window, and when it was discovered Liverpool and Arsenal would not be bidding. Spurs was his preferred choice for the reasons we have explained.

“The club were conscious of keeping a player against his will and the longer that saga played out the more his value would decrease.

“The club also believe that Bowen is a much better right winger than Kudus and can strengthen other positions.

“They were also quick to point out that £35m of this seasons budget has been spent on Todibo already.

“Please do not shoot the messenger this is what I have been told.”

West Ham have since made it known that the fee received will be spent on new signings, with pressure on the club to now seriously back Graham Potter in landing the top targets he has identified, to help rebuild our team ahead of an incredibly important season.
