Report: Everton and Leeds discover who has won the race to sign Juventus' Timothy Weah, £13m move 'very close'

Leeds United and Everton seem to be linked with a lot of the same players this summer. One of them is Timothy Weah at Juventus whose next club now seems crystal clear.

This summer, Angus Kinnear left Leeds United to join Everton and become the Toffees’ new CEO. And it seems as though he’s taken the list of Leeds United transfer targets with him, as the two teams are linked with a handful of the same players this summer.

Names include Vladimir Coufal, James McAtee, and Timothy Weah. Earlier in the summer it was reported that Leeds United are interested in Weah at Juventus, where he’s among the several to have fallen out of favour going into this summer.

The USMNT man, who plays alongside Brenden Aaronson on the international stage, scored five and assisted two more in 30 Serie A games last season. But that’s not been enough to impress manager Igor Tudor.

It’s been suggested that Leeds United and Everton are leading the race to sign Weah this summer. But it’s France where the 25-year-old could be headed next, according to journalist Gianni Balzarini.

Marseille set to win race for Leeds United transfer target Timothy Weah

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Italian journalist Gianni Balzarini has revealed that Weah is seemingly close to being sold to Marseille this summer. He says that a move is ‘close’ and that a €15million (£12.94million) has been agreed, with Weah set to rake in ‘around €2.5million’ every year (£2.16million-a-year, or just over £48,000-a-week).

Balzarini said: “He’s very close to selling to De Zerbi at Olympic Marseille for a fee around €15million. Since he arrived, he hasn’t increased his value… He’ll earn around €2.5million net per-year. Marseille would like a loan with an option to buy, which becomes mandatory upon reaching certain objectives.”

So far this summer Leeds United have signed four new players, with Gabriel Gudmundsson arriving at Elland Road this week, potentially closely followed by Sean Longstaff at Newcastle United.

Leeds United have already bid for a new winger after Timothy Weah blow

With a deal for Weah now looking unlikely, Daniel Farke has already turned his attentions elsewhere, with Leeds United submitting a bid for Jeremie Boga.

Reports this week have revealed how Leeds United have made a £13million bid to sign Boga from Nice, who scored once and assisted once more in 21 Ligue 1 outings in the 2024/25 season.

And his stats certainly don’t paint a pretty picture: whether or not he’d come in as a starter or as a player more for the future remains to be seen, but someone like Weah with a bit more experience and pedigree might have been preferred, especially given that he was valued at about the same price.

Leeds have already missed out on several targets this summer, with Sunderland the main beneficiary. As time goes on Farke may have to go further and further down his list of targets, and as a result the quality will decline.
