Free agent Jordan Henderson eyes Premier League return after Ajax exit

Jordan Henderson has officially terminated his contract with Ajax, snubbing a one-year extension in favour of a fresh challenge — possibly back in the Premier League.

According to The Times’ Paul Joyce, the 35-year-old midfielder is now a free agent, drawing interest from top-flight clubs in England and across Europe.

Let’s rewind: Henderson joined Ajax in January 2024 on an 18-month deal after his short-lived, controversial Saudi stint with Al-Ettifaq.

He wasted no time settling in Amsterdam, becoming club captain within weeks and nearly steering them to an Eredivisie title — only for Ajax to bottle a nine-point lead as PSV Eindhoven swooped in.

Still, Henderson led with composure, made 57 appearances, scored once, and helped Ajax secure a Champions League group stage spot for 2025/26. Not bad for a “washed” midfielder.

Henderson eyeing poetic Premier League return

Yet, he’s opted to walk — World Cup 2026 on his mind, and England boss Thomas Tuchel keeping tabs.

After being ghosted by Gareth Southgate throughout 2024, Hendo is suddenly back on the radar, even starting in Tuchel’s squad in last month’s win over Andorra.

It’s clear: Henderson wants a club that’ll give him serious minutes and serious chances to make that World Cup roster.

And the return could be poetic. Rumours are swirling around newly-promoted Sunderland — his boyhood club.

Imagine: Henderson back in red and white, closing the circle on his career where it all began before his £20 million Liverpool move in 2011.

But don’t expect a rushed announcement. Out of deep respect for his late former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, Henderson is pressing pause.

He flew to Gondomar for Jota and Andre Silva’s funeral and visited the growing tribute mural at Anfield — a gesture that shows the man’s class beyond the pitch.
