Newcastle United have reopened talks with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with different outlets reporting that the free agent striker has held talks with the club following his exit from Everton.
The 28-year-old, now available without a transfer fee, has been a long-term target for manager Eddie Howe. The Magpies manager had previously pushed to sign Calvert-Lewin, but a combination of Everton’s high valuation and the player’s wage demands stalled negotiations. That’s no longer a problem, making a deal more feasible.
With Callum Wilson having left the club and Alexander Isak firmly established as the first-choice No. 9, Newcastle are looking for depth ahead of a demanding season.
That said, Calvert-Lewin could snub Newcastle given Alexander Isak’s clear-cut starting role and the lack of minutes for whoever arrives in Tyneside to play back-up to the Sweden international.
The former Everton striker scored 71 goals in 273 appearances and was named the club’s Player of the Season in 2020-21. However, concerns remain about his injury record.
Any potential deal for the former Toffee is expected to include performance-related clauses, while Manchester United and Leeds United have also been linked to the striker.
