It’s time for our annual summer series where we look back on the Colts draft picks in 2025, via the scouts.
Here are the Colts scouts on 7th round pick Hunter Wohler
The more you can do, the better.
That’s especially true when you are a late-round draft pick.
Part of what attracted the Colts to Wisconsin safety Hunter Wohler was all the places they saw the Badgers leading tackler each of the last two seasons line up.
“With Hunter, the versatility was the key thing, especially later in the draft,” Colts area scout Tyler Hughes explained. “He’s played a lot of down linebacker, he’s played strong safety, he’s played free safety, he was the punt returner this year, which shows that he’s a reliable dude and coaches trust him. Super smart. He’s going to be a great special teams player for us.”
Initially, the Colts announced Wohler as a linebacker, but the thought was the 7th round pick would primarily be a defensive back at the pro level.
Wohler was a safety this spring and got a chance to get some valuable special teams looks, which will be a must if he’s going to make the team.
Unlike most 7th round picks, Wohler was chosen by a team that also has a wide open depth chart behind starters Cam Bynum and Nick Cross.
Another promising situation for Wohler to walk into is a new defensive coordinator very open to playing more defensive backs.
The Colts are not expected to be a heavy 3-linebacker personnel grouping on the field, leaning more towards 5, and even 6, defensive backs on the field, at times.
Hearing that should be music to the ears of Wohler trying to make the team, and potentially carve out a roster spot.
“With how much sub-package we’re in, in the NFL nowadays, that dime linebacker role is nice for him,” Hughes says.
“But that’s not going to limit him to play strong safety or free safety. He has the frame to play all of them.”
