“Honestly, I didn’t know what to think at first,” Powell admitted at his introductory media session. “It’s been a crazy last couple weeks… I was expecting extension talks when I got back from Europe, but then I got the call that I was traded. Obviously, it’s a shock.”
That surprise quickly turned into excitement once he learned the destination. “I was really excited. I’ve had teammates talk about the fans, the city, the organization,” Powell said. “Growing up a big Dwyane Wade fan, watching the Heat—it’s definitely a full-circle moment for me.”
Coming off a career-best season, Powell attributed his success to grit, repetition, and finally having space to thrive. “I fit the culture perfectly—grit, competitiveness, late nights, early mornings,” he said. “Getting the full opportunity to showcase my game and make mistakes, to be a focal point—that made the difference.”
Powell, 31, isn’t shy about his ambitions. “I see myself as a key guy, a one-two option that can help carry a team,” he said. “I’ve never believed in the limitations people talk about. I’ve always seen myself as a go-to guy who can help a team win. I can be an All-Star given the right opportunity.”
He’s especially looking forward to playing alongside Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, calling them “versatile, scrappy, and confident.” He sees his shooting, off-ball movement, and pick-and-roll game as strong complements to their styles.
Powell also plans to re-establish himself on the defensive end. “I’m really excited to put my imprint on the defensive end and get back to guarding and pressuring,” he said.
When asked if he feels underrated, Powell responded thoughtfully. “I never viewed myself as that, but I think I am… playing alongside All-Stars and Hall of Famers, you kind of take a backseat. But I know what I bring to the table.”
