City goalkeeper Katie Startup sat down with former players from Manchester Corinthians to learn more about their pioneering legacy.
The team, based in Didsbury, were founded in the late 1940s in defiance of the English FA’s ban on women’s football.
From playing in Venezuela to beating Juventus, the Corinthians blazed a trail for almost half a century, with several members also featuring for City’s first women’s team in 1988.
Famous faces from City’s past also supported their cause such as Bert Trautmann, who coached the team for a period in the 1950s during a trip to Germany.
REMEMBERING THE CORINTHIANS
Club historian Gary James has worked tirelessly to promote their incredible story, with a plaque unveiled in Didsbury’s Fog Lane Park in October 2023 in recognition of their achievements.
His research has continued with the publishing of Manchester Corinthians: The Authorised History, which is available from all usual book retailers and can be ordered directly from Gary by clicking here.
A short film has also been created to honour their legacy, produced by Imprint Films and driven by John Tueart - son of City legend Dennis.

And former Manchester Corinthians players were invited to the City Football Academy to watch the film and meet one of our current stars, Katie Startup.
The goalkeeper watched the short film before enjoying a thought provoking discussion with members of the Corinthians, reflecting on her personal journey in the game and the challenges she and other female footballers still experience.
