Newcastle United parted company with Callum Wilson after five years earlier this week.
Alan Shearer has urged Newcastle United to sign a striker following Callum Wilson’s exit.
Wilson bid an emotional farewell to the Magpies after five years on Monday having considered a fresh deal. Newcastle offered the 33-year-old reduced, incentivised terms given his age and injury struggles.
He is now looking for another club, with United also on the hunt for a striker to dovetail undisputed first-choice Alexander Isak. Will Osula is chomping at the bit for action but remains one for the future despite impressing at the under-21 Euros.
Newcastle United striker chase so far
It is no secret that Newcastle pushed for Joao Pedro before his big-money move to Chelsea. Toon chiefs were confident in landing the former Brighton man but that hope waned once the Blues entered the race.
A versatile forward, Pedro would have given Eddie Howe options in several offensive positions. This was also the case for Matheus Cunha - another player Newcastle liked until he joined Manchester United.
The Daily Mail has claimed in recent days that Ollie Watkins and Yoane Wissa are potential targets. Fabrizio Romano also surprisingly reported yesterday that the Magpies maintain an interest in Hugo Ekitike, who has twice rejected a move to St James’ Park.
Alan Shearer on Callum Wilson successor
Toon icon Shearer believes Newcastle can get “three or four” players in but should prioritise signing a striker. He told The Rest Is Football podcast: “Because of Callum Wilson not renewing his contract, they are going to need another player in that forward position, but that’s a really good start (to the window). I think they’ll get another three or four in.”

Alan Shearer on Anthony Elanga
Shearer also expressed his delight at Newcastle finally managing a breakthrough in the transfer market - with Anthony Elanga’s arrival imminent. He added: “Very happy, I said the other day I was a little bit concerned with the lack of activity coming out of Newcastle, but it looks as if things are starting to move.
“I’m pretty sure we’ll get it over the line. I think it’s a good signing. He is rapid, he’ll work really, really well with Isak because they’ll obviously know each other. So yeah, really happy with that.
“When you look at who they’ll have, Murphy and Elanga on the right side. They’ve got Barnes and Gordon (on the left) side. Isak up top. I’m happy with that.”
