'There is movement': Progress now happening with player who 'Liverpool have been calling for weeks' - Romano

Hugo Ekitike has been consistently linked with a Liverpool switch ever since the summer transfer window opened up.

The young Frenchman had a rather impressive return for Eintracht Frankfurt throughout the 2024-25 campaign, with the Bundesliga outfit solely relying upon him when Omar Marmoush was bought by Manchester City.

Other Premier League clubs, such as Chelsea, have also been linked with a move for the former PSG man, but with Ekitike’s price tag currently sitting at around £85million, it feels like a lot of money for a team to put up.

Now, however, Fabrizio Romano has shared a new update on where the 23-year-old’s future may lie.

Saudi Pro League clubs are now eyeing a move for Hugo Ekitike

The striker transfer market has been flooded with players wanting to leave their clubs this summer.

The most high-profile players to have caused a stir are likely Joao Pedro and Victor Osimhen.

The former of the two has now found a new home at Chelsea, with Osimhen now also on the cusp of sealing a return to Galatasaray.

And, speaking via his YouTube channel, Romano shared a new update on Ekitike’s future, who is another highly sought-after number nine.

“There is movement on Hugo Ekitike, with interest from Saudi, but the priority of the player remains England,” he said.

“And with Newcastle interested in Hugo Ekitike, there is still interest also from more clubs.

“Because clubs like Liverpool, Chelsea have been calling for the player for weeks, since June, for example, being informed on the situation of Hugo Ekitike.”

Hugo Ekitike still feels like a massive risk for Liverpool

If Frankfurt didn’t want such an extortionate fee for Ekitike, he’d likely be a smart move for Liverpool.

While on the pitch, the striker often floats over to the left wing and tries to find his way into the box with the ball at his feet.

He also has plenty of pace, which allows him to break through opposition defenders if and when needed.

And, judging by his 22 goals across all competitions last season, it’s clear that he’s got a keen eye for goal.

However, since the 2024-25 campaign is the first time he’s managed to net over 10 goals in his career, he still feels like too much of a project for Liverpool to take on, especially since they need a guaranteed goalscorer.

Only time will tell what the future has in store for Liverpool and Ekitike, but on paper, it feels like a massive risk for the Reds to take, especially since they’ve already spent £116million on Florian Wirtz.
