Newcastle stance on fresh $68M Marc Guehi transfer approach amid Liverpool interest

Newcastle is yet to renew its interest in Liverpool target Marc Guehi, who Crystal Palace has priced at around $68 million (£50 million. Guehi, 24, has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool, with the Reds leading the race for his signature.

However, this time last year, Newcastle was keen to secure his signature. Fresh from an impressive performance at Euro 2024, the England international attracted four bids from St James' Park chiefs, escalating to $88M (£65m).

None of these offers met Palace's $95M (£70m) valuation, leading Newcastle to eventually withdraw from the chase. With Guehi now in the final year of his contract, Palace haS had to reduce its asking price this summer.

As it stands, Newcastle hasn't re-entered the fray for the FA Cup-winning captain. According to The Chronicle, Eddie Howe and his team are keeping an eye on Guehi's situation from a distance, but they haven't ruled out returning to the negotiation table.

Liverpool, therefore, remains the front-runner, aiming to add to its $270M-plus summer spending spree. The Reds are eager to sign a younger center-back than Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, the latter of whom is also entering the final year of his contract amidst reported interest from Real Madrid.

It's reported that Guehi would be prepared to see out his contract if Palace cannot arrange his departure before the summer transfer window shuts on Monday, September 1.

There's also the matter of Chelsea, who are entitled to 15 per cent of any profit above the $24M (£18m) it received when selling the 24 year old in 2021.

The Blues themselves have been loosely mentioned but it's Liverpool who seems to be Newcastle's strongest rivals. The Magpies were keen to secure Guehi a year ago but Palace chairman Steve Parish made it evident that they'd require 'superstar money'.

Parish told BBC Sport: "We'd like to keep hold of him. There's a price and a situation where we might consider it. Somebody [in another interview] said he's a superstar, so somebody has got to pay superstar money.

"Realistically, homegrown, 24 years old, sensational talent, somebody has to make it difficult for us. At the moment it isn't.

"He'll still be at Crystal Palace at the moment, but it's not impossible. He is certainly not making anybody's life difficult, his agents are decent people.

It's a very good situation. Whether he is here or not will make no difference to how he performs."
