Fenerbahçe and Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly agreed on a deal for Marco Asensio.
The 29-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, but a return to the club now appears unlikely.
That’s because well-connected Turkish football journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu claims that Fenerbahçe have taken a significant step toward signing Asensio.
After reaching an agreement with PSG, José Mourinho’s side will now attempt to finalise personal terms with the player.
Reports suggest that Asensio rejected an annual salary offer of €9 million, but negotiations are ongoing.
Asensio initially impressed during his loan spell at Villa, scoring eight goals in eight appearances, including a hat-trick of braces in three home matches - against Chelsea, Cardiff City, and Club Brugge - contributing all but one of Villa’s goals in those wins.
However, his form declined as the season progressed. He missed two penalties in a 3–0 win at Southampton and failed to convert a one-on-one chance against Gianluigi Donnarumma during the second leg of Villa’s Champions League quarter-final against PSG. A goal in that moment would have made it 4–2 on the night and levelled the tie at 5–5 on aggregate.
Another key miss came in Villa’s 4–1 win over Newcastle United, when Asensio misfired from close range after being set up by Ian Maatsen - just moments after Fabian Schär had equalised at the Holte End. He finished the season without scoring in his final 11 matches.
Manager Mourinho will also be working with Jhon Durán next season, as the striker has joined the Istanbul-based club on a deal running until June 2026 - setting up a potential Europa League reunion with Villa.
