'I have ambition' - Callum Wilson publicly teases Chelsea move after Newcastle United exit

Callum Wilson is a free agent following his Newcastle United exit earlier this week.

Callum Wilson joked to Chelsea midfielder Enzo Maresca that he would have joined the club if it were not for Joao Pedro.

Newcastle United parted company with Wilson on Monday, one week after his contract expired. The 33-year-old spent five years at St James’ Park, scoring 49 goals despite a mountain of injury problems.

Wilson helped keep Newcastle afloat during Mike Ashley’s latter years and played a crucial role in Champions League qualification two years ago. His role was reduced once Alexander Isak arrived and developed into one of Europe’s top strikers.

Callum Wilson options

A fresh deal was offered but on reduced terms, with Wilson snubbing the proposal to seek first-team opportunities elsewhere. Leeds United have been linked with a possible move as they aim to cement their Premier League status.

Interestingly, The Athletic have also claimed Manchester United are keeping tabs on Wilson’s situation to provide experience up front. However, an approach would only be made if the Red Devils do not land their top targets.

Callum Wilson jokes about Chelsea move

Working as a DAZN pundit during Chelsea’s Club World Cup win over Fluminense, Wilson quipped to Fernandez about joining the club. That was until Joao Pedro - a Newcastle United target earlier in the window - bagged a brace to send the Blues to the final.

Wilson also set his sights on joining a Premier League club as he closes in on 100 goals. He said: "Enzo, I was going to offer my services, but it seems like you don't need them now Joao is there!

“I mean, obviously, I have ambitions," the 33-year-old said following links to Burnley and Leeds United. I'm close to getting 100 goals and that's something I'd like to achieve. I still feel fit and hungry."
