Report: Liverpool preparing move for £100m star who's told friends he wants to join, it’s not…

Liverpool could continue to spend big this summer via a surprise move for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, according to reports - with the club still keen on the winger after not being able to close a deal for his signature last summer.

Gordon joined the Magpies in January 2023, and although he suffered a slow start to life in the north-east, an outstanding individual campaign in black and white in the 2023/24 campaign was followed up by an equally impressive one last season, winning his first major trophy as a player in the League Cup. That has seen the Reds take interest and a deal could be done if plates are spun in the transfer window.

The report by Football Insider states that Liverpool remain interested in Gordon after missing out on him last summer - and are now plotting a late summer move for his services to strengthen their attack under Arne Slot.

The England international almost secured a shock switch to Anfield last June, with Newcastle having to juggle with PSR guidelines - though their late sales of Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton saw them get over the line in terms of avoiding punishment.

Gordon reportedly told friends that he was 'very keen' on the switch back to Merseyside, having previously played for local rivals Everton after coming through their youth ranks - and with that in mind, the Reds have been 'keeping close tabs' on his development on Tyneside.

With Newcastle now close to confirming the signing of Anthony Elanga, as well as reportedly monitoring a move for out-of-sorts Manchester City star Jack Grealish, it could see them seal a move away for Gordon if they receive a high-enough bid, having managed to successfully keep Alexander Isak.

With Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy already in their wide ranks, having a five-strong cohort of wingers could see Eddie Howe somewhat open to selling Gordon if he receives a bid that is too good to turn down, despite him being the crown jewel of his winger contingency.

That bid would have to be a jaw-dropping £100million, though Gordon is still open to a move to Liverpool despite signing a new contract in October - and a sale for Luis Diaz could further prompt that bid.
