26yo Man Utd star returns to training today, gets new shirt number

Manchester United have kicked off their preparations ahead of the 2025-26 season.

The club have confirmed on ManUtd.com that Diogo Dalot will now be wearing the no.2 jersey rather than the no.20 that he has held since he arrived at the club from Porto in 2018.

The no.2 jersey was available after the departure of Victor Lindelof.

Rafael, Wes Brown and former club captain Gary Neville have donned this jersey previously.

Dalot returned to training at Carrington today and was spotted with a new shirt number.

The Portuguese defender is expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming campaign under head coach Ruben Amorim.

The former Sporting Lisbon manager mainly deployed him at wing-back last term, but he could also use him in the right centre-back spot in the future.

If United can sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, Amad Diallo could be perfect for the right wing-back spot.

Diallo has thrived in this position, adding flair and impressing with his fearless attacking intent.

Amorim needs to be brave with his team selection in the new season.

Playing with five defenders in a 3-4-2-1 formation places too much responsibility on the front three.

The Portuguese head coach wants his defenders to be technically sound with the ball at their feet.

Dalot is a progressive defender and will help United play out from the back.

There will be concerns around his alterness in defending and that is the area the 26-year-old needs to work on.
