There will be a mini Chiefs reunion at the American Century Championship in South Lake Tahoe.
That’s the annual celebrity golf tournament that features entertainers and sports fans. Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and his brother, Jason, will take part in the three-day event, which begins Friday.
So will former Chiefs safety Justin Reid, who signed a free-agent deal with the New Orleans Saints earlier this year. Reid loves playing golf in his spare time and he’s likely to get a hug from Travis Kelce.
That’s certain to make Chiefs fans smile, but it won’t be the reason why you should keep an eye on Kelce when the tournament begins Friday. No, pay close attention to his caddie.
As he explained on the latest episode of the New Heights podcast, Kelce made a bet with his longtime friend Patrick Bacon.
“He had been trying to lose weight so I told him, ‘All right, I’ll make you a bet for Tahoe. If you get down 25 pounds by Tahoe, I’ll give you 10 bands,’” Kelce said. “And he said, ‘All right, deal.’ And I said, ‘All right, but I don’t want money. If you lose the bet, you have to do a round at Tahoe dressed as the Blue Man (Group).’”
Ten bands is $10,000.
No wonder Jason Kelce said, “Wow” when he heard the amount of money Travis Kelce was putting up in the wager. For those unfamiliar with the Blue Man Group, it is a performance trio known for their blue bald heads.
Travis Kelce said the weigh-in will be Thursday, although Bacon wanted to do it Friday morning. There is a practice round for the golfers on Thursday.
“As soon as we get the Tahoe, you’re on the scale, and either you’re there or you’re not,” Kelce said he told Bacon. “We’re not doing this whole like you go to the sauna and don’t eat anything for a day and just sweat it out.”
Much like Tobias Fünke on “Arrested Development,” Travis Kelce got all the materials he needs to make sure his friend is decked out in blue.
Kelce even stopped by a specialty store, one that I admit I didn’t know existed.
“I did it the right way. I went to a clown shop,” he said. “Got the blue paint, got the bald skully that you’ve got to put on. And then there’s like a certain, like, over the top layer that you put on so that it doesn’t like sweat and get in the eyes and mouth and (stuff).”
The thought of Kelce at a clown shop is hilarious but it won’t be anything compared to his caddie dressed like a member of the Blue Man Group while carrying the Chiefs star’s golf clubs.
