Stunning Trade Idea Sends Lakers' LeBron James to West Rival for New Super-Team

21-time All-NBA Los Angeles Lakers power forward LeBron James did just pick up his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season, but it doesn't seem like the 6-foot-9 former four-time MVP is totally sold on L.A.'s roster.

After he picked up his option, however, James' agent Rich Paul told Shams Charania of ESPN that James was eager to win his fifth NBA title. The language Paul used seemed to suggest that James would be open to a trade, although that was not made explicit.

James, 40, has a no-trade clause on his deal, meaning he would have full control over the move.

"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul told Charania. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career."

The Lakers currently boast an impressive core of James, five-time All-NBA First Team guard Luka Doncic, and guard Austin Reaves — but it's clear that they have a ways to go when it comes to winning it all. Los Angeles was obliterated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in a five-game first round playoff series this spring, as the club's clear depth and center issues became glaringly apparent.

"We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future," Paul added. "We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."

Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report suggests that the San Antonio Spurs could make a bid to pair James with its exciting young core of All-Star center Victor Wembanyama, reigning Rookie of the Year guard Stephon Castle, and 2025 No. 2 pick Dylan Harper.

All-Star point guard De'Aaron Fox, for now, is still the club's lead playmaker, although with all these young guards it's possible San Antonio could move him for major value.

"Los Angeles might ask for more draft compensation, but the Spurs can draw a hard line knowing there aren't many teams in the marketplace who can match their combination of quality rotation players with minimal long-term financial commitments," Hughes notes.

Barnes is on an expiring $19 million deal and still has valuable as a 3-and-D forward with championship experience. Sochan will be a restricted free agent next summer. Johnson, meanwhile, is under contract through 2026-27. The Lakers would add intriguing young pieces in Sochan and Johnson, plus some draft equity.
