Villa News Speaking to Ian Darke

Monchi has been pivotal to Aston Villa’s rise in recent years.

Unai Emery‘s right-hand man is in control of transfer business, and his dealings were vital in the Villans securing Champions League football last season.

However, they failed to secure that once again, missing out on the final day last season, which has left possible problems in the transfer window.

With V Sports agreeing to purchase a stake in the women’s team, Villa look to have resolved their Profit and Sustainability issues, though.

Monchi to leave Villa as Emery split close

The Villans’ President of Football Operations has been linked with his former club Sevilla, and Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce amid speculation over a Villa Park exit.

Iconic commentator Ian Darke believes that the Spaniard could depart the B6 this summer, as he may fancy a new challenge.

MORE VILLA STORIES

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, he said: “He had a big reputation for turning water into wine at Sevilla, in terms of getting deals over the line, they constantly won the Europa League.

“He was almost seen as a kind of minor miracle worker, I don’t think he has got that mystique surrounding him in England now, for whatever reason.

“It may be that there could be a change, he may feel like his race is run at Villa, or he has got a better offer to go somewhere else.

“I think that is what the story is with him, he was almost seen as a Svengali-like figure when he was at Sevilla, obviously, he worked with Unai Emery there.

“I would be a bit surprised if he was going to split up from Emery as they almost come as an item, it could be that they cannot do the deals they want to do, or he just fancies a change, you just don’t know, do you?”

Villa may struggle to keep Monchi amid exit developments

Darke raises a worrying point: Monchi could well decide to move on to a new challenge this summer, especially if he cannot do the business that he wants due to the financial restrictions.

Villa’s signings last season under Monchi.

While the Villans have starved off the need to sell the likes of Jacob Ramsey and Morgan Rogers, they still need to comply with UEFA’s squad cost regulations, and therefore reduce the wage bill.

That does not bode well for their plans for the market and potentially also Monchi’s future.
