Max Wober is far from a fan favourite at Elland Road.

Following the Whites‘ relegation from the Premier League, Wober, along with others, unceremoniously left on loan, with the Austrian international joining Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Ahead of United’s second campaign back in the Championship following their play-off final defeat, Wober returned to West Yorkshire, much to the dismay of supporters.

This time, the defender stayed put, but the 27-year-old hardly kicked a ball last season as Leeds were promoted back to the top-flight.

Wober wants permanent move after Leeds exit news

Following Leeds’ promotion to the Premier League, Wober has left again on loan, this time joining Werder Bremen.

With players like Jaka Bijol arriving at Elland Road, the Austrian was unlikely to feature much again next season, but a loan deal as opposed to a permanent sale suited Leeds’ PSR situation better.

Speaking to German outlet Bild (10 July), Wober claimed he would like to make his move to Germany a permanent one despite a ball not being kicked yet in the Bundesliga season.

“My wife and I had a long-distance relationship. But as parents-to-be, we want to have a common centre of life. Hopefully it will be Bremen,” said Wöber.

The defender’s return to West Yorkshire was plagued by injuries, limiting him to just two league starts.

Wober was largely a spectator as Leeds won the title last season.

Wober admitted that last season was a struggle amid his knee injuries.

“The season was tough. Nobody knew what the problem was. It was a long period of suffering. I had lost the fun of football,” he admitted.

“I went out on the pitch every day with a swollen knee and pain. The doctors said it looks good. But I realised it’s not normal.”

Leeds fans happy to see the back of Wober

After only joining the Whites in January of 2023 before forcing a move out in the same summer, Wober was never truly accepted again by the Elland Road faithful.

A permanent parting seems like the best option for both parties and is likely to occur next summer.

Leeds supporters will be hoping the defensive additions of Bijol, alongside Sebastiaan Bornauw and Gabriel Gudmundsson, make a better impression for United during their time in the Premier League.

Daniel Farke will need more additions to his squad before the window closes, with a move for goalkeeper Angus Gunn potentially on the cards.
