Chiefs Teammate Send Clear Message About Patrick Mahomes Before Training Camp

Patrick Mahomes is upset about last season, says Kansas City Chiefs teammate and wide receiver Xavier Worthy. When asked why he believes that, Worthy, who mentioned lingering “anger” from the loss in the Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles, had interesting reasons.

Worthy’s comments could double as a warning for the league.

“He cut his hair,” Worthy told Adams on “Up & Adams” on July 10. “He in a different mode right now.”

Worthy was really just reinforcing a belief he shared the day before, when he took to social media to offer a reminder about his three-time Super Bowl champion QB.

“Best in the Business,” Worthy posted on his Instagram stories on July 9.

Worthy and Mahomes connected for 59 receptions, 638 yards, and 6 touchdowns in 2024, giving him one of three rookie receivers in franchise history to have at least 50 grabs, 600 yards, and 5 TDs in a season.

Mahomes, though, said during his appearance on Adams’ show that he believes this year’s team has the deepest WR corps he has had.

That includes the Super Bowl-winning team with Tyreek Hill.

Mahomes, who had an especially rough outing against the Eagles’ stout defense in the Super Bowl, noted that while those other teams may have been more top-heavy with talent at receiver, they did not have the array of quality options this team does.

“I think that it is going to be the deepest. It’s hard to always say. You had Tyreek and Travis Kelce, Hall of Famers, in the prime of their careers, and it’s hard to always say that it could be deeper than that,” Mahomes told Adams on July 7. “It’s going to be hard to make cuts because we have so many great receivers that we could be eight, nine-deep, the guys I could see making the roster.”

In addition to Worthy, the Chiefs get Rashee Rice back from a torn ACL, and they re-signed Marquise Brown. They also selected Jalen Royals, another speedster, in the 2025 NFL Draft.

According to Worthy, they are all pulling on the same end of the rope.

“I think we’re really locked in right now. Everybody’s came back. This is my Year 2, this is Rashee’s Year 3, this is Hollywood’s Year 2 in the system. So, I feel like a lot of guys came back more comfortable, and it made things easier,” Worthy said. We’re not just kind of easing into things, we’re not learning the playbook, we’re not thinking. We’re just going out there and going out there and playing.”

Worthy made no bones about resentment over the loss in his first Super Bowl. He spoke about how that anger can motivate or act as a detriment.

“I’m a winner. So, just a loss in general – I hate losing more than I like winning. As a competitor, I feel like that’s how it should be,” Worthy said. “You want to come back. You really don’t have another chance to redeem yourself. So, it’s always like, man, you have to wait till next year. So, all that built-up tension, all that built-up anger is just carried over to next year, and it’s either you’re going to stack on it, or you’re going to carry over from the loss.”

Make no mistake, though, Mahomes is also out to prove the detractors wrong.

“I’m honestly just ready to play football again. Whenever you lose, you kind of have this taste in your mouth that you want to go out there and revenge that, or whatever you want to say. But at the same time, I feel like I’ve had to sit back and just listen to people talk and talk. And I’m like, ‘Let’s just play football and just handle it all out there.’” Mahomes told Adams.

“I don’t really want to talk about it. I just want to go out and show who we are as the Kansas City Chiefs.”

The Chiefs will open training camp for rookies and veterans on July 21.
