Outpouring of support after life-changing injuries 'unexpected': Chiedozie

Chiedozie was hit by a car while stood on the hard shoulder of the M27 changing a tyre on Bashley physio Reighan Taylor’s car, as the pair came back from a game against Tavistock.

He was rushed to hospital in Southampton and lost a leg, with the 30-year-old recently fitted for a prosthetic as he continues his recovery.

Bashley are set to face Chiedozie’s former club AFC Bournemouth in a pre-season friendly tonight, with Alan Connell’s development squad making the short trip to the Veho Community Stadium.

Since being fitted for his prosthetic, Chiedozie said there has been “a lot of physio work.

“And on different things, different obstacles that I'll come up with daily life. Just getting used to it, getting used to getting up on my feet and using it again.”

Immediately after the incident, Chiedozie’s teammates set up a GoFundMe fundraiser, that has since raised more than £34,075, seeing an outpouring of support from clubs across the area and beyond.

Reflecting on the support, he said: “It's been really nice to see and it helps to see everyone's support. It's not something I expected, but it’s really good to see.

“A lot of old teammates, old friends and people that I've not had contact with for a while, to hear from them, it's been good.”

“I think you just have to \[stay positive\], you just have to get on with it,” he said.

“If you stay too much thinking of what happened and the past, I don't think it helps with the recovery and being able to get as close as to normal as before, going forward.”

Chiedozie is looking forward to the game on Friday night.

“It should be good,” he said.

“I played in a preseason game for Bournemouth against Bashley when I was an under 21 so it will be good to see them playing that game.

“But also just to see a lot of faces that I've not seen for a while, catch up with people and obviously they're all there for the game and for my support as well so it will be a nice occasion.”

“That's a tricky question, I'd probably say Bashley, but I always want Bournemouth to do well as well!” he said.

“But I'd probably say I want Bashley to do well in the game. But obviously it's a preseason game, so it's more about getting time and fitness for the players.

“So as long as everyone gets through it fine and gets what they need to get out of it, it'll be good for both teams.”

AFC Bournemouth’s development squad visit Bashley on Friday, July 11, kick off 7.30pm. Tickets are available through the Bashley website.
