Jordan Henderson rips up Ajax contract as England star released from deal a year early.
End of the Road in Amsterdam for Jordan Henderson
Jordan Henderson is officially ended his contract with Ajax. Just six months after his switch to the club in the Netherlands, he is leaving the side.
The midfielder and Ajax have mutually agreed to terminate his contract until mid-2026. The club confirmed this in a statement, released on Thursday morning to thank Henderson for his time.
Henderson made 57 appearances and scored one goal while he was in Amsterdam. Although, he was unable to finish out his time with the team. He received praise from Ajax technical director Alex Kroes. He was called as a “true captain”, with regards to his time on the pitch.
Henderson had a lot to offer at the Dutch side. However, making such a quick decision to leave has raised eyebrows all over Europe. This comes especially just ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
What’s Next for the Former Liverpool Captain?
Rumours quickly followed Henderson’s exit, with early speculations linking him to a return to his boyhood side Sunderland. Local media wasted no time in attempting to write off that rumour as well. Reportedly, the Black Cats weren’t looking to add a midfielder at this moment.
There were mentions of other clubs too, Nottingham Forest and Marseille were also said to be interested as well. Henderson had just arrived at Ajax from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq. In Saudi, he joined his former teammate Steven Gerrard at the club. Although, the move didn’t quite go as expected.
One door may have closed, but another will open. Wherever Henderson may end up this summer, it is clear that he made the decision with a lot of consideration. He will be thinking for both longevity in his career and possibly, for international football.
