LOS ANGELES (KYMA/KECY) - Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris is recovering after suffering an eye injury during a fireworks mishap over the Fourth of July weekend.

Harris’ agent, Doug Hendrickson, confirmed the incident and told ESPN the injury is “superficial.” The good news Harris is expected to be ready for the start of the NFL season.

The accident happened in Antioch, California. According to local reports, several people were injured including one person who was hospitalized after reportedly losing fingers in the explosion.

Harris signed a one-year deal with the Chargers this offseason, joining a franchise that’s looking to reboot its rushing attack under new head coach Jim Harbaugh. Harris brings both experience and toughness rushing for over 1,000 yards in each of his four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Should Harris miss any time in training camp, the Chargers could look to first-round pick Omarion Hampton to take on a bigger role early.

The team has struggled to find a true No. 1 back in recent years. In fact, the last time the Chargers had a 1,000-yard rusher was back in 2017, when Melvin Gordon topped the mark.

As of now, the Chargers have not issued a comment on the incident.
