Aaron Cresswell has completed a free transfer move to Championship outfit Stoke City - while expressing his thanks for the opportunity to continue his career.
With his 36th birthday rapidly approaching (this December), the former Hammer - who spent 11 years at the club before being released at the end of June - may have thought his career in the upper echelons of English football may be coming to an end.
However he has been granted the opportunity to continue playing by the Potters, who have been busily expanding their first team squad in recent days.
Speaking on behalf of his new club, Sporting Director Jonathan Walters explained why they had no qualms in offering the veteran a 12-month contract.
"Aaron’s career speaks for itself, both in terms of his quality as a player and his character," he told Stoke's website. "Everyone we have spoken to has had nothing but praise for him, not just for his ability but for his professionalism and the way he carries himself.
"To have played almost 600 games at the level that he has says everything about how well Aaron looks after himself, how reliable he is, and how much trust managers have consistently placed in him throughout his career.
"We’re delighted to welcome him into the Stoke City family and look forward to seeing him wear the red and white stripes at the bet365 Stadium."
And the player himself admitted he was delighted at being offered the opportunity to remain in the game, even though a drop in divisions was required for a player who was still representing West Ham's first team as recently as May.
"I’m really appreciative of the opportunity to join Stoke City and I’m excited for the season ahead," he said. "Having spoke with Jon [Walters], the gaffer and Nev [Paul Nevin], who I worked with at West Ham United, it was evident how passionate they are about the project here, while their determination to bring success to the club was clear.
"I have been fortunate to work in environments of high standards and professionalism throughout my career. That’s something which is ingrained in me and I will deliver every day. I’m now looking forward to meeting the lads and getting straight to work in Spain this week."
As well as teaming up with former Hammers coach Nevin, Cresswell joins fellow former Hammer Divin Mubama - ho recently completed a season-long loan move from Manchester City - at the bet365 Stadium.
