Maanum nets twice, Walti also through to quarters

Frida Maanum scored twice as Norway won Group A of UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 with nine points, courtesy of a 4-3 victory over Iceland on Thursday.

Elsewhere, captain Lia Walti was on the verge of elimination with host nation Switzerland when they went 1-0 down to Finland, but a 93rd minute equaliser from Riola Xhemaili saw them finish second in the group to reach the quarter-finals.

At the Stockhorn Arena in Thun, it was Sveindis Jane Jonsdottir who broke the deadlock for Iceland, who had already been knocked out and were playing for pride, but Norway responded through Signe Gaupset’s equaliser.

She made it 2-1 11 minutes later to put Norway in control, and Maanum scored her first of the night four minutes into the second half, receiving the ball centrally and playing a tidy one-two with Gaupset on the left before controlling the ball on her right foot and tucking it into the bottom right corner on her left.

Maanum’s second goal was similar, but this time without the one-two, as she drifted towards the edge of the area and again picked out the bottom right with her left foot.

The three-goal lead was reduced to one courtesy of late strikes from Hlin Eiriksdottir and Glodis Perla Viggosdottir, but Norway are through to the knockout stage where they will face either Spain, Italy or Portugal in the quarter-finals.

For Switzerland, they will come up against the winners of Group B, which can only be Spain or Italy.

The host nation only had to draw to progress last night, but a 79th minute penalty from Finland’s Natali Kuikka made it look like the tournament would end early for Switzerland.

It wasn’t to be though, with Xhemaili being in the right place at the right time to equalise in the 92nd minute, bringing about jubilant celebrations at an atmospheric Stade de Genève.
