Another door may have just opened for Liverpool to make big money in the market this summer - opinion

Darwin Nunez’s Liverpool future has had question marks hanging over it for the last season or so.

The attacker failed to perform to the standards expected of him last year, with Mohamed Salah having to pick up the slack on more than one occasion.

Granted, things ended up working out as Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions, but Arne Slot can’t expect The Egyptian King to put in another performance like that.

With this in mind, it isn’t a surprise to see the Uruguay international being linked with a couple of teams this summer.

Darwin Nunez could end up making a move to Atletico Madrid

At the start of the summer transfer window, Liverpool were linked with Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez while Diego Simeone’s men were linked with captain chaos.

However, over the last few weeks, interest from both parties seems to have died down, and talks of a swap deal are now non-existent.

But now that Angel Correa has chosen to leave the La Liga outfit and join Tigres [ESPN], Simeone may well choose to explore a deal for Nunez once again.

This would open things up massively for Liverpool as, at the moment, it only feels like Napoli want to sign him.

And, since the Reds want to get rid of the striker and Antonio Conte has no competition, the Serie A outfit are trying to get as much money off the deal as possible.

In Liverpool’s case, Atletico coming back in for Nunez would be ideal as it would give them a much stronger leg to stand on, especially if both teams end up seeing him as an ideal target.

Liverpool should sell Darwin Nunez this summer

Although there have been times when Nunez has been one of Liverpool’s best players, that version of him doesn’t come out often enough.

Many fans expected him to be as good as Erling Haaland when his move was first announced, but in reality, he’s way too inconsistent to be considered on the same level as the Norwegian.

Nunez only contributed to 14 goals last season, which, for a team that wants to compete for every trophy possible, is far from ideal.

Of course, his luck could turn around at some point, and Slot may end up regretting selling the Uruguayan, but since the Reds have already spent close to £200million on improving their ranks, they need to recoup the money they’ve spent, one way or another.
