Jordan Henderson is set to rejoin the Premier League this summer.
The England international left Ajax via mutual termination with his wages believed to be too much for the Dutch giants.
Arriving in Amsterdam as a free agent from Al-Ettifaq in January 2024, Jordan Henderson quickly racked up 57 appearances and wore the captain’s armband for much of his time with the club.
However, Henderson’s weekly salary – reported to be around €80,000 – proved unsustainable for Ajax’s financial structure.
According to Dutch media, this led both parties to agree on an early contract termination, despite his influence on and off the pitch.
The England international made his farewells in Zeist on Wednesday, saying goodbye to teammates and staff as his brief but eventful stay in the Netherlands came to an end
Now David Ornstein has revealed that Henderson is set to join Brentford as a free agent signing:
“Jordan Henderson is set to join Brentford as a free agent after the midfielder’s exit from Ajax.”
“The 35-year-old England international left the Dutch club when his contract was terminated by mutual agreement — and he will return to the Premier League on a two-year deal until 2027.”
“A medical and paperwork will be done over the weekend but an official announcement is not expected until next week out of respect to former team-mate Diogo Jota and his family, following the Liverpool attacker’s tragic death.”
This comes after plenty of speculation that the former Liverpool man would end up at boyhood side Sunderland.
Henderson is seen as a direct replacement for Christian Norgaard in the deep-lying midfield role, and his leadership and experience are expected to offer Brentford much more.
His arrival is hoped to provide stability as the club faces the loss of key personnel and looks to rebuild for the upcoming Premier League season with Thomas Frank no longer at the helm.
The Liverpool icon will link up with former teammate Caoimhin Kelleher, who made a £18m switch to the Bees last month.
