MM 7.11: Maryland men’s basketball alum Derik Queen logs double-double in Summer League debut

_By Rachel Lawrence_

Former Maryland men’s basketball star Derik Queen made his professional debut with the New Orleans Pelicans in an NBA 2K26 Summer League game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

To open his NBA career, Queen achieved a double-double, logging 13 points and retrieving 10 rebounds. During the second quarter, Queen landed a behind the back pass to his teammate Hunter Dickinson resulting in a 13-foot jumpshot — one of Queen’s three assists for the game.

Queen’s first points didn’t come until the 3rd quarter, when he made two driving layups and a 13-foot jumper. His other scores came from another shot in the post, two successful free-throws, and a 26-foot three-point jump shot at the end of the fourth quarter.

The Pelicans lost to the Timberwolves 98-91. Queen finished his first professional game with a 55.5% field goal percentage, but he was also responsible for seven turnovers in 26 minutes.

Queen will play next on Saturday, July 12 against the Los Angeles Lakers.
