Liverpool just announced unique Diogo Jota tribute plans for first pre-season game vs Preston

Diogo Jota and Andre Silva will be commemorated with a number of tributes during Liverpool’s match against Preston North End. The Reds will take to the pitch at Deepdale Stadium on Sunday afternoon for a pre-season friendly, marking their first game since the tragic road traffic accident in Spain that claimed the lives of the two brothers.

There has already been a powerful and deeply moving outpouring of love for the Jota family across all walks of life. The club has stated they will "immortalise number 20" in one way or another, while Anfield has transformed into an emotional tribute site - filled with scarves, balloons, stuffed toys, and heartfelt messages of love and sorrow, with all four corners of the stadium now blanketed in memories.

Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher were among the first to post tributes online following the heartbreaking news, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and many clubs across the football world also offering their condolences. And as the 2025/26 season approaches - with the Reds focused on defending the Premier League title they won last term - the remembrance of Jota and his brother is expected to carry on for a long time to come.

Ahead of the 3pm BST kick-off, there will be a rendition of Liverpool’s official club anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, and the home club will lay a wreath alongside the away supporters in the Bill Shankly Kop stand. A minute’s silence will also be observed in memory of Diogo and Andre, with digital tributes displayed on the big screen and across the pitchside LED boards.

Both sets of players will wear black armbands, while Preston have also produced a commemorative 18-page edition of the matchday programme, featuring written tributes to the siblings.

Jota, 28, had only recently married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso on June 22, sharing images of their ceremony on social media just two weeks ago. The couple had three children together - their firstborn in 2021, and their third arriving in November. His funeral took place at the same venue and was attended by Liverpool and Portugal teammates, both past and present.

Sunday’s match will be broadcast live in the UK on ITV, shown on LFCTV, and streamed globally via All Red Video, with coverage beginning at 2:15pm.

The tributes mirror those expected when Newcastle United host Arne Slot’s side in the Premier League on August 25, with the Magpies announcing they will play Liverpool’s anthem ahead of kick-off, acknowledging the respect the Merseyside club showed them during their mourning of Cheick Tiote in 2017.
