Journalist insists Manchester United want to pay player’s transfer clause – President won’t answer the phone

Manchester United would pay the €70m plus €10m to sign Viktor Gyökeres tomorrow, but Sporting Club de Portugal are no longer picking the phone up to calls from Ruben Amorim.

That’s according to journalist Pedro Sousa, [via Leonino](https://leonino.pt/revelacao-bombastica-de-pedro-sousa-ha-quem-pague-mais-que-arsenal-para-tirar-gyokeres-do-sporting), who believes Manchester United wouldn’t hesitate to pay what is required for the Swedish striker.

Gyökeres is currently being targeted by Arsenal and has been allowed to delay a return to Sporting’s squad for pre-season as they negotiate with the Gunners.

So far, the two clubs have failed to reach an agreement for the striker to move to the Emirates, with Arsenal haggling over Sporting’s asking price despite Gyökeres having a clause worth €70m plus €10m.

It’s been made clear that any offer for that value would see a deal done quickly but Arsenal are yet to make it. In the meantime, the situation has become increasingly tense, with Gyökeres and his agent in open dispute with Sporting for the best part of a month already.

He has been linked with other clubs this summer, including Manchester United, who Sousa says would be more than happy to pay the clause outright.

“There are clubs that want to pay €70m plus €10m. Manchester United would pay €70m plus €10m tomorrow, but I don’t know if he (Frederico Varandas) is still answering the phone to Ruben Amorim,” he said on Record na Hora.

“I believe that if Ruben Amorim ever wants to talk about this, he’ll confirm that he didn’t even play because there was no chance.

“For me, the most surreal thing is admitting outright that he (Gyökeres) has a 5-year commitment. That’s another thing I don’t know how far Sporting will go in this intransigence. This can’t be assumed like this, because it’s illegal.”
