Liverpool have decided to fulfil the fixture, despite suggestions that the game would be cancelled following the tragic deaths. The club has been in deep mourning since the car crash in Northern Spain last week.

Jota and his brother will be memorialised at the fixture by both supporters.

The match will be Liverpool's first game since their celebrations for winning the 2024-25 Premier League season. Liverpool returned to preseason training late due to Jota's death and funeral.

Liverpool said on Friday that the Preston game will be preceded by a minute's silence for Jota and his brother, and both teams will wear black armbands. Before kickoff, a rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone will take place and supporters of both clubs will lay a commemorative wreath.

Preston will also create a commemorative matchday programme that will honour the memories of both Jota and his brother.

Liverpool fans can look forward to the possibility of seeing some of their new signings in action. Liverpool have spent over £200 million this summer on Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and record signing Florian Wirtz.
