Manchester United have confirmed that Chido Obi has changed his shirt number as he prepares for his first full season in senior football. The 17-year-old striker broke into Ruben Amorim's first team last term, less than a year after joining from Arsenal's academy, and looks primed to stay there.
On Friday, United announced that Obi had switched shirt numbers from the No. 56 to the No. 32, an upgrade that indicates his heightened prominence in Amorim's plans. Supporters will have fond memories of a Carlos Tevez donning the number when he made up an iconic attack alongside Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo from 2007 to 2009.
Obi earned his first eight appearances for United last season due to a raft of attacking injuries that plagued an already-disastrous campaign.
He will be eyeing further involvement across the next several months and could compete with Rasmus Hojlund for a starting berth.
Amorim reportedly wants to sign a new striker after Hojlund scored just four Premier League goals in 2024/25, but faces a tall task in doing so.
If Bryan Mbeumo finally joins, United will require player sales to fund more arrivals after splashing in excess of £125million to sign the Brentford forward and Matheus Cunha.
However, Amorim has already faced frustrations in his bid to recruit a striker this summer, having been rejected by two top targets.
Liam Delap said no to an Old Trafford switch in favour of a £30m move to Chelsea. Meanwhile, Viktor Gyokeres is prioritising Arsenal rather than a reunion with his former Sporting boss.
United have also been linked to Victor Osimhen and Hugo Ekitike, but they would demand a significant salary and transfer fee.
Amorim could opt to use any money generated from outgoings, though the Red Devils are also struggling in that aspect, to strengthen his midfield instead.
