£50m defensive target keen on Newcastle United move after learning of interest from Premier…

Newcastle United's next priority, after wrapping up a move for Anthony Elanga is thought to be bringing in a new striker; however, there's still the matter of adding a new centre-back to the roster.

All has gone quiet on Newcastle's pursuit of Marc Guehi, while Atalanta's Giorgio Scalvini seems to have jumped to the top of Eddie Howe's wishlist if reports are to be believed.

The 21-year-old centre-back is being tracked by Manchester United and a host of Serie A clubs, including Juventus, but Atalanta are in no rush to sell.

Scalvini missed most of last season through injury and ended up making just eight appearances in all competitions.

Giorgio Scalvini is flattered by Newcastle's interest

The goalposts have moved once again for Giorgio Scalvini

While his injury record is a concern, Atalanta aren't letting it shave any money off their asking price with the iPaper reporting they want £50 million for the Italy international.

Newcastle won't be willing to part with that kind of money for a 21-year-old with no Premier League experience, but they may still try their hand with a cheeky bid to see what they get back.

Newcastle were reported to have made an approach earlier in the window when it was believed that £30 million would be all it would take to get a deal done.

Atalanta don't seem to know what they want to do with Giorgio Scalvini

Since that report of £30 million we've heard Atalanta deem him as 'unsellable' and now they want a deal worth £50 million. So it seems they don't know what they want.

However, Scalvini himself is flattered that Newcastle want him, and that could help the Magpies with a bid for him this summer.

Fingers crossed we don't let this one slip by, because his value is only going to go up when he gets back to playing regularly.
