Real Madrid could look to sign Cristian Romero from Tottenham to fix their defensive struggles.
The football world watched in shock when PSG put four past Real Madrid in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final on Wednesday (9 July).
The game has reinforced the idea that the Spanish club needs to sign further defensive reinforcements despite adding Dean Huijsen to their squad last month.
It has been widely reported that Florentino Pérez has been a long-time admirer of Romero. Therefore, with Atletico Madrid seemingly out of the race, Real could make a move.

Atletico Madrid end their pursuit of Romero
As reported by The Athletic on Friday (11 July), Atletico have ended their pursuit of Romero and believe that Tottenham will tie him to a new contract.

However, when Real Madrid come knocking, most players give in to their advances. Trent Alexander-Arnold left his boyhood club, Liverpool, to join Los Blancos on a free transfer, and with two years left on his contract, there will be fears that Romero could do something similar.
As a result, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Spurs should extend Romero’s contract as soon as possible.
“Full efforts now need to be on convincing Romero to sign a renewed contract,” Wenham said.
“He has only got two years left, and that would put the full control back in the player’s hands for next summer. You look at Real Madrid’s ageing defence and you think they could make a move for him.
“I hope that Tottenham can agree on a deal with him.”

Tottenham must extend Romero soon
With Real Madrid in the habit of signing players on a free transfer, Tottenham must extend Romero even if he goes on to leave.
The centre-back has blossomed into one of the best defenders in the Premier League during his tenure at Spurs, and it would be a huge failure if the club do not make a profit.
Therefore, the North London club must accelerate negotiations with the defender this summer.
