Rookie center Yang Hansen will make his NBA Summer League debut as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers Friday night when they take on the Golden State Warriors in Las Vegas.
However, this won’t be Yang’s first taste of summer league action.
China, where the 7-foot-1 Yang played two seasons in the Chinese Basketball Association, in 2024 sent a national team to play in the California Summer League.
That session didn’t go very well for Yang, the 16th pick in the 2025 NBA draft.
In his first game, Yang came off the bench to play 16 minutes and scored eight points with three rebounds and two assists during a 101-50 loss to the Sacramento Kings.
In his following outing, Yang started and in 21 minutes scored 12 points with four rebounds and one assist, but committed seven turnovers during a 93-62 loss to the Charlotte Hornets.
In Team China’s final game, Yang played 25 minutes, scored six points on 0-of-5 shooting and added eight rebounds while committing four turnovers during an 89-67 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.
Blazers guard Sidy Cissoko, who played for that Spurs team, said Yang has looked great during Blazers practices leading up to the opening game.
“His IQ is very high,” Cissoko told reporters at the team’s Tualatin practice facility. “He doesn’t speak the language, but he understands how to play. He has a translator, but I don’t think he really needs one.”
Yang said last week that he looked forward to competing at with his teammates in Las Vegas.
“I will enjoy the competition, for sure,” Yang said. “I will enjoy the process.”
