When it comes to dollar amounts being thrown around in sports, the number just keeps going up, and we're not just talking about player contracts, either.

According to CNBC's Michael Ozanian, who ranked the top 20 sports ownership groups on the planet, the entire list is worth a total of $225 billion. And, 12 of those spots are taken up by ownership groups with stakes in NFL teams.

Taking the top spot among the "most valuable sports empires" in the world is Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, which is valued at $21.17 billion.

The ownership group, which is headed by Stanley and Josh Kroenke, has sports properties including the NFL's Los Angeles Rams, the NBA's Denver Nuggets, the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and the Premier League's Arsenal.

Coming in second is the Jones family, led by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. That empire, which also includes Legends Hospitality and The Star in Frisco, is worth $15.53 billion.

Yet another NFL ownership group rounds out the top three, with the Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment group, which owns franchises such as the NFL's Washington Commanders and NBA's Philadelphia 76ers, among others, is worth $14.58 billion.

Ozanian notes that we could see a few new entrants onto the list soon, including Mark Walter, who owns the Los Angeles Dodgers and recently agreed to buy a controlling stake in the Los Angeles Lakers for $10 billion.

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson could also crack the list after agreeing to buy a 43% share in the Premier League's Crystal Palace.
