Could the New York Knicks round out their 2025-26 roster with one of the greatest point guards of all time? One notable beat writer recently linked the team to Chris Paul and several other veteran guards still available in NBA free agency.
While they haven’t made the blockbuster trade some speculated they could this summer, this has been an active offseason for the Knicks. They hired Mike Brown to be their new head coach. And made two very nice additions to the bench by signing Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele.

However, New York Post Knicks insider Stefan Bondy believes the team isn’t done. And he is under the impression they could be targeting another guard for the reserve unit. In a new column, he took a look at “five options that I’ve either heard the Knicks are interested in or make hypothetical sense.” Interestingly enough, one of them is future Hall of Famer Chris Paul.
“I can’t resist the idea of Paul reuniting with Mikal Bridges from their Phoenix run, and his former agent, Leon Rose, while finishing his Hall of Fame career at MSG,” Bondy wrote. However, he also clearly admits, he believes it is probably unlikely. Mainly because all signs point to Paul wanting to play closer to his family in Los Angeles. If he does return for a 21st season in the league.
While signing Paul is a long shot, he does believe former Boston Celtics glue-guy, Marcus Smart, is a realistic option.
“Per a source, the Knicks are monitoring the situation with Smart, who is a buyout candidate currently under contract with the Wizards,” Bondy wrote. “… At his maximized self, Smart is an elite on-ball defender who brings a toughness, chutzpah and a little bit of crazy that the Knicks were missing last season (and tried to acquire by signing P.J. Tucker).”
Although New York has an interest in the 11-year vet, Bondy does believe he will have many suitors if he hits NBA free agency. And several that could offer much more money.
