Peach Jam bounces its way back to North Augusta this weekend

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Peach Jam returns Sunday to North Augusta, bringing together the best in basketball, from future Division I prospects to current and former NBA players.

The Riverview Activities Center has been transformed into EYBL Arena for the event from Sunday through July 20, ending with the crowning of the champion of Nike’s summer basketball circuit.

This is the 29th consecutive year for one of the most longstanding and prestigious grassroots basketball tournaments on the amateur circuit.

It will feature the best high school basketball players from the U.S. and Canada.

The tournament will host three age divisions of 17 and under, 16 and under, and 15 and under.

Meanwhile, the Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center will be the site of Nike Jr. EYBL seventh- and eighth-grade championships from July 14-20.

All of the teams at Peach Jam had to qualify in the EYBL summer league to make it.

Competition will be intense, and even the stars of professional basketball will be there.

“On social media, somebody takes a picture of Lebron James sitting in a gym, and boom, here come people running to the activity center,” said Rick Meyer, director of North Augusta Parks and Recreation.

This year, there will be more chances to watch. Nike always has four tournaments across the country before the players get to the Peach Jam.

“Well, this year, they’ve done three, and tournament number four is happening right here in North Augusta, the weekend prior to the actual Peach Jam event,” Meyer said.

Local businesses welcome the event that last year had a roughly $15.3 million economic impact.

That’s because the 8,500 players, fans, coaches and families need hotels, food and drinks throughout the week.

The time leading up to Peach Jam takes weeks of preparation for businesses.

And the best part? More people in town means more exposure.
