How Leeds United’s spending compares to Burnley and Sunderland, it’s quite scary - opinion

The Premier League is going to be a cruel mistress for the three newly promoted sides.

Leeds United, Burnley, and Sunderland will all bask in the glory of England’s elite next season.

The only problem is, as history suggests, all three are very likely to go down due to the gap between the two divisions.

Sam Byram backs Leeds to stay up, but currently, that doesn’t paint the picture after the early days of the transfer window.

When comparing each newly promoted team’s spending so far, it should be a concerning sign for Leeds.

Leeds United’s spending compared to Burnley and Sunderland

Of course, all three teams will likely be in a similar ballpark for signings this summer as they gear up for the Premier League.

This has already been shown through the Mackems’ desire to explore the same targets as Leeds.

Unluckily for Daniel Farke, Regis Le Bris has come out on top, with Sunderland pinching Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki.

This has added to Sunderland’s vast spending, and when you add Scott Parker’s Burnley into the equation, the Clarets have also been going under the radar.

It’s not like the 49ers have been slacking with four new additions, but it just seems as though the strategy Leeds’ rivals are using has been working.

With this in mind, there is a stark contrast with how much all three sides have actually spent so far this window.

Newly-promoted Premier League sides’ spending so far

Sunderland £82.4m

Burnley £60.2m

Leeds £30.4m

This might raise alarm bells in the Leeds camp as it’s clear Sunderland and Burnley aren’t messing about.

Leeds will want to avoid August mayhem this window

With the Whites by no means slacking, it’s still been a slower start than what Paraag Marathe’s ‘aggressive’ transfer pledge suggests.

Still, four signings this early in July is impressive, but they aren’t keeping the same level as Sunderland, with there being a big difference between their highest transfer fees so far.

All three promoted teams’ highest transfer fee so far

Sunderland Habib Diarra – £30m

Leeds Jaka Bijol – £15m

Burnley Loum Tchaouna – £13m

This is no disregard to Jaka Bijol, who is an exceptional piece of business at £15m, but it seems Leeds are yet to land that marquee signing which others have.

What the 49ers don’t want to do now is get involved with the August lull, where signings will prove more difficult to bring in, and July needs to be the month that Leeds strike in terms of spending their remaining budget.
