Real Madrid accelerate Konate push: Bernabeu move hinges on exit deals

Real Madrid are considering stepping up their pursuit of Ibrahima Konate in the current window, with a move dependent on whether they can sell players already deemed surplus to requirements.

The Liverpool centre-back has been on Madrid’s radar for some time and is now seen as a viable target for this summer following his refusal to extend his contract at Anfield, which runs out next year.

Spanish outlet AS reports that Madrid are seriously weighing a move for Konate, and while they are not willing to meet Liverpool’s €50 million (£43 million) valuation, they could firm up their interest if funds are raised from outgoing transfers.

Xabi Alonso has already greenlit the sale of several squad players to streamline the squad and generate revenue. Should those exits be completed in the coming weeks, Madrid would look to use the funds to try and negotiate a lower fee for the French defender.

While Konate is not Madrid’s primary target — with Arsenal’s William Saliba still regarded as the dream signing — the reality of Saliba’s long-term contract means Madrid have had to explore more attainable alternatives.

Konate, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021, has emerged as the most realistic option and is open to the switch. Madrid are hoping to capitalise on the uncertainty surrounding his future, especially as Liverpool are keen to avoid a repeat of the Trent Alexander-Arnold contract saga.

The 26-year-old has told the club he does not intend to renew, and AS claims Madrid are prepared to offer between €20 million and €25 million if they can create space and balance their squad with player sales.

Although Liverpool are reluctant to accept such a figure, there is growing belief in Spain that the Reds may eventually soften their stance if Konate’s stance remains firm and Madrid act quickly enough.

Madrid have already signed Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, but Alonso wants another centre-back, especially after a lacklustre showing against PSG in the Club World Cup semi-final.

Konate remains high on the list, but Real Madrid’s ability to table a bid this summer will hinge on how successful they are in moving on the players Alonso no longer counts on.

If they manage that, the Frenchman could yet arrive at the Bernabeu a year ahead of schedule.
