Let’s get this straight, LeBron James did not step in and block Brook Lopez from joining the Los Angeles Lakers. But in the most unexpected way, he might have stopped the team from making a crucial mistake even if it was not his intentional doing.
According to ESPN, “Free agent center Brook Lopez… had strongly considered the Lakers and the potential starting role, grew wary of the uncertainty around James' future with the team and opted to sign with the rival LA Clippers, where he will be a backup.”
At first glance to some, Lopez looked like a missed opportunity
Lopez is a former All-Star, he was an NBA champion with the Milwaukee Bucks, and he is considered one of the league’s best shot-blocking bigs. But the truth is, him walking may have quietly saved the Lakers from falling into an old habit which is relying on a fading name instead of finding the right fit.
LeBron was not trying to push Lopez away. But his lack of a clear commitment, at least in that moment, created just enough hesitation to cause Lopez to look elsewhere. LeBron’s agent Rich Paul said it best in a statement to ESPN before LeBron decided to pick up his $52.6 million player option.
“We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future," Paul stated. "We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him.”
Lopez is experienced, but he is 37 years old, and no longer the force he once was. His rim protection and shooting are valuable in small bursts, but his limited mobility, rebounding, and offensive versatility would have made him a risky full-time starter, especially deep into the playoffs.
Lopez out, Deandre Ayton in
With Lopez walking, the Lakers were able to turn their focus toward a far more dynamic option in Deandre Ayton. The former No. 1 draft pick in 2018 is still only 26 years old. Ayton brings more athleticism, and even has some playoff experience.
He has averaged at least 14 points and 10 rebounds in every season of his career, and has more ability to run the floor, and finish lobs. He is the kind of center who complements Luka Doncic’s window and the franchise’s future.
Due to James simply being uncertain, he was able to shift the offseason in a better direction. The Lakers did not get the guy they thought they wanted. They got the one they actually needed.
