Former Creighton center Ryan Kalkbrenner made his NBA Summer League debut Friday during the Charlotte Hornets' 111-105 win over the Utah Jazz in Las Vegas.
In his first audition to be Charlotte's starting big man, Kalkbrenner — taken 34th overall in this year's draft — started for the Hornets and dropped 10 points — on nine shots — with five rebounds, four assists, three blocks and a steal in 30 minutes.
It didn't take long for the 7-foot-1 rim protector to make his presence felt.
In the opening minutes, Kalkbrenner backed down Florida product Walter Clayton, spun around the reigning national champ and laid one in for his first bucket.
A couple of possessions later, Kalkbrenner flushed another open look at the rim.
Kalkbrenner showed flashes of what made him a four-time Big East defensive player of the year and the kind of paint presence Charlotte needs after trading its top two centers this offseason.

His first block was a transition chasedown that ended with Kalkbrenner swatting what seemed to be an open look.
Omaha Central grad John Tonje, also taken in the second round of the draft by the Jazz, didn't play. His status is unclear in the Summer League due to an ankle injury.
Shortly after the draft, Kalkbrenner said he was capable of and aimed to contribute right away. Friday was the first of many opportunities Kalkbrenner will have to prove his worth to Charlotte.
The Hornets play the Philadelphia 76ers at 5:30 p.m. Saturday on ESPN2. All Summer League games will stream on ESPN+.
