Newcastle United would have to agree a £100million deal to sign Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins this summer.

Eddie Howe’s side are on the lookout for a new striker after Callum Wilson’s exit has been confirmed at St James’ Park.

The Mail reported on 8 July Watkins is being discussed as a potential option to improve the Tyneside club’s forward line.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Newcastle would have to pay £50million to sign the 29-year-old and offer him a £50million contract.

Manchester United have also been linked with Watkins as they look to strengthen their attacking options this summer.

The England international, who is under contract at Villa Park until June 2028, was the subject of a £40million bid from Arsenal in the January transfer window.

Newcastle could agree Ollie Watkins deal after £70m windfall

Borson revealed Newcastle could have the capacity to sign a player like Watkins after qualifying for the Champions League.

He told Football Insider: “I think we can see that Newcastle have got a kind of £125-150million budget before selling.

“Watkins is a player you can think about buying, but we talked previously about how much he would cost overall and his age.

“It’s a £100million deal basically. It’s a £50million fee and it’s a £50million contract there or there about.

“That’s the entry price. You want to buy a proven striker, it’s a £100million commitment.

“Have they got it? Have they got the capacity? Have they got the appetite to push PSR this season?

“Then on the other side, maybe they have because they have big revenues coming through next season through the Champions League.

“It’s probably £60-70million guaranteed, with five home games almost certainly. It mounts up.”
