Levi Colwill says this Chelsea side has the self-belief to take on any team in world football, and believes the Blues could be peaking at just the right time for Sunday’s Club World Cup final.
The defender and his team-mates are busy preparing in New Jersey to face Paris Saint-Germain at the MetLife Stadium, with the title of world champions up for grabs for the winner.
It has been a long journey to reach this stage of the competition, and the excitement within the squad has been growing as we edge closer to the final. However, Colwill insists the players aren’t congratulating themselves just yet. Instead, they remain fully focused on going one step further to bring the trophy back to London.
‘We’re all really excited to be in the final,’ said the 22-year-old. ‘It’s a huge competition and to be one of the first finalists is amazing. That was our aim at the start of the tournament.
‘To know that we’ve made it this far, it’s been a really good achievement, but it’s not over yet. We’ve not come here just to make the final, we’ve come here to win. That’s what we’re all looking forward to trying to do, to preparing really well for.’
Colwill knows the Blues face a tough task in Sunday’s final, though, in attempting to overcome European champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The French side have shown their strength with high-scoring wins over Inter Milan in the Champions League final and Real Madrid in the semi-finals of this competition, but our Academy graduate believes we will present a different challenge of their own for PSG to contend with.
‘Of course, they’re a very good team and we respect them for that,’ the England international continued. ‘We watched the last game and how good they were. That’s one game of football, we totally believe in ourselves to get over the line.
‘They are an amazing team, they were really good in the semi-finals, but Real Madrid are very different to us. We are not Inter or Real Madrid, we're going to bring something different. They don’t press like us or play like us. They can’t expect us to give them the same game. We’re going to bring different things.
‘You have to respect how they press, how they play, but we’re not going to change our whole way to play them. We’ve got our plan, our identity, which we’re going to stick to through the gaffer. That’s when we play our best football.
‘We’ve got this far playing our football, so why would we change that now? We believe in ourselves and we want to try to prove that’s the way to do so. I believe in us and I think we can beat anyone so we’re going to take that confidence going into the game.’
There is also the fact that tournament football can often be decided by who builds momentum at the right moment of the competition, as has been seen many times in World Cups at international level.
After an impressive 2-0 victory over Fluminense in the semis, Colwill believes that could be the case for the Blues, with our form during the knockout stages helping to build confidence going into the final.
‘Of course, we’ve learned so much in this competition. That’s the best thing about competition football: one game that can change everything. We’ll be really confident.
‘It definitely feels like we are peaking at a good time. In the semi-finals, it was a really strong performance, and hopefully, come the final, it will be even better. But we’re really excited for it.
‘The final of a tournament like this is where the best play the best, so we’re happy to be here. It’s just one game of football and when you play for Chelsea you’re not scared to play against anyone and that’s how we all feel.’
