Newcastle United returned to pre-season training this week - and the Magpies’ winger Jacob Murphy has shed some light on it.

It’s been a busy week for Newcastle United’s returning players. Long gone are the days where players turned up, back after weeks on holiday, to get themselves fit again ahead of the new season. These days it’s a 365 days per year job.

Players have been posting their training regimes, tailored to their needs, on social media throughout the off season, but it was back to the day-to-day for many this week, with testing then early ball work out on the training pitches at Benton.

While we saw the likes of previously injured duo Lewis Hall and Joelinton back out on the pitch, we also saw others such as Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles and the rest of the squad being put through their paces.

NUFC internationals return

It’s not yet time for the Magpies’ internationals, however. All that comes next week. So for Sandro Tonali, Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, Dan Burn and Bruno Guimaraes and the like, it’s still been ‘feet up’ time before the hard work starts in earnest next week.

But what will be in store for them? Jacob Murphy, via TikTok account, Stat Sports, has revealed what Howe put the players through this week, after their summer away from the camp.

Jacob Murphy reveals Eddie Howe training technique

Q: How do you know if you’re in good shape and ready to go?

Murphy: “I think the first thing you’ll know is by looking in the mirror and see what shape you’re in. We start pre-season with a yoyo test. Pretty old school, but it’s a good marker to see where your fitness is.”

Q: Yoyo test? What is that?

Murphy: “Cone at one point, cone at another - and between the bleeps you have to get in, in a certain time. And then you keep going until you can’t go no more.”
