How much money Leeds would need to splash to become highest-spending promoted club ever

It has been claimed that Leeds United have the capacity to spend big this summer under the 49ers’ regime.

If the owners wanted to, Leeds could spend over £150m in what is set to be an ambitious summer.

Four new additions have given the Whites a strong start, but they are nowhere near competing with Sunderland and Burnley.

Sunderland have spent £52m more than Leeds, and Daniel Farke must be questioning when marquee signings are going to come through the door.

With this taken into account, the Mackems can’t be far away from the highest-spending promoted club, but this is how far Leeds are as things stand.

With minimal deals being made, it’s unlikely the 49ers will sanction bumper deals at Elland Road.

That’s been the story of the ownership’s tenure so far, as Paraag Marathe clearly loves a bargain.

Free transfers will likely be made this summer as Callum Wilson wants to be the number one option after his contract expired.

This wouldn’t help Leeds reach the figure of the highest-spending promoted club ever, as the Whites are nowhere near this feat.

Nottingham Forest hold the record for the most money spent after being promoted to the Premier League, and Leeds are a long way off their figure, £140m to be exact.

Highest-spending promoted clubs of all-time

1. Nottingham Forest 22/23 – £170m

2. Aston Villa 19/20 – £138m

3. Ipswich Town 24/25 – £131.7m

4. Leeds United 20/21 – £109.6m

… Leeds 25/26 – £30.1m*

How much Leeds are likely to spend in the rest of the window

With it looking like a massive stretch that Leeds would spend an additional £140m, it just shows how much it really takes to survive in the Premier League.

Ipswich Town appear on the list, and although they fought hard, it was ultimately a harsh reality for The Tractor Boys.

The Whites don’t want to follow the same fate, and although spending doesn’t always mean safety, the 49ers need to step it up.

Currently, it appears Vanja Milinkovic-Savic joining Leeds and Anton Stach’s consideration remain plausible for the next few signings, but nothing is concrete yet.

At least six more players are needed for Leeds, and judging by the transfer strategy, which looks to be cheap deals, the owners could look to spend, at most, £90m more this summer, but it could be much lower.

However, judging by the current rate of things, £90m is a sum only fans could dream of, and it’s clear the 49ers need to get into gear.
