Goalkeeper Andre Onana will miss Manchester United's pre-season tour of the United States because of a hamstring injury, according to a report by The Telegraph.
It is reported the Cameroonian sustained the blow in training at Carrington this week and could be sidelined for 'six to eight weeks' following an early assessment.
As a result, he will miss the upcoming tour of the United States and potentially the start of the new Premier League season. United face Arsenal in their season curtain-raiser at Old Trafford on August 17.
Amid this setback, United must now decide if they will enter the transfer market for a first-choice goalkeeper. As reported by the Manchester Evening News back in January, head coach Ruben Amorim wants to strengthen his goalkeeping department this summer.
It is understood the Portuguese chief, who will watch United face Leeds United in their first pre-season friendly in Stockholm next Saturday, wants to recruit a shot-stopper that can challenge and compete with Onana for the No.1 spot.
The Cameroonian, who has attracted interest from AS Monaco already this summer, returned to Carrington for the start of pre-season training under the impression that he will remain the club's first-choice goalkeeper this summer.
Altay Bayindir is expected to leave United in this window after the club decided to tie Tom Heaton down to a new one-year deal last month. However, news of Onana's hamstring injury could put the brakes on an immediate departure for Bayindir.
United are not short on options in the goalkeeping department, so much so Onana trained alongside Bayindir, Heaton, Elyh Harrison, Dermot Mee and Radek Vitek at Carrington this week.
The latter spent last season out on loan at Austrian club BW Linz, making 28 appearances, keeping seven clean sheets. He could now be in with a chance of going on the tour of the US.
United will play three games in the US, facing West Ham United, Bournemouth and Everton in the Premier League Summer Series.
